41 ലക്ഷമാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ ജനസംഖ്യ. രാജ്യത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ തുറമുഖം കൂടിയായ അലക്സാണ്ട്രിയയിലൂടെയാണ് ഈജിപ്തിലെ 80%-ഓളം കയറ്റുമതിയും ഇറക്കുമതിയും നടക്കുന്നത്. ഇത് ഒരു പ്രധാന വിനോദസഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രം കൂടെയാണ്.
ഉത്തര-മദ്ധ്യ ഈജിപ്തിൽ മെഡിറ്ററേനിയൻ കടൽത്തീരത്തിന്റെ 32 കിലോമീറ്ററിലായി ഈ നഗരം വ്യാപിച്ച് കിടക്കുന്നു. പ്രകൃതി വാതക നിക്ഷേപവും സൂയസിൽ നിന്നുള്ള എണ്ണ പൈപ്പുകളും അലക്സാണ്ട്രിയയെ ഒരു പ്രധാന വ്യവസായ കേന്ദ്രമാക്കുന്നു. മെഡിറ്ററേനിയൻ കടലിനും ചെങ്കടലിനും ഇടയിലായുള്ള സ്ഥാനം മൂലം മുൻ കാലങ്ങളിൽ യൂറോപ്പും ഏഷ്യയും തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യാപാരങ്ങളുടേ ഒരു കേന്ദ്രമായും അലക്സാണ്ട്രിയ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്നു.
പുരാതന കാലത്ത് അലക്സാണ്ട്രിയ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ നഗരങ്ങളിലൊന്നായിരുന്നു. 334 ബി.സി.യിൽ ഒരു ഫറവോ പട്ടണത്തിനു ചുറ്റുമായി മഹാനായ അലക്സാണ്ടർ ചക്രവർത്തിയാണ് ഈ നഗരം സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്. 641-ലെ മുസ്ലീങ്ങൾ കീഴടക്കുന്നത്വ രെ നഗരം ഈജിപ്തിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്നു.
അലക്സാണ്ട്രിയയിലെ ദീപസ്തംഭം, അലക്സാണ്ട്രിയയിലെ ഗ്രന്ഥശാല തുടങ്ങിയവ പുരാതന കാലത്ത് ഈ നഗരത്തിന് വളരെയധികം പ്രശസ്തി നേടിക്കൊടുത്തിരുന്നു.

[തിരുത്തുക]അലക്സാണ്ട്രിയയിൽ ധാരാളം ഉന്നതവിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുണ്ട്. അലക്സാണ്ട്രിയ സർവ്വകലാശാലയാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പൊതു സർവ്വകലാശാല. സ്വകാര്യ ഫ്രഞ്ച് സർവ്വകലാശൈലയാണ് സെനഗോർ സർവ്വകലാശാല. രാഷ്ട്രമീമാംസ, ഹ്യുമാനിറ്റിസ് എന്നിവയിലാണ് ഇവിടെ പഠനം നടക്കുന്നത്. ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിലെ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെയാണ് ഇവർ ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.
