ഒരു ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് രാജകുമാരിയായിരുന്ന മേരി ടുഡോർ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സിംഹാസനം അലങ്കരിച്ച ടുഡോർ വംശജരുടെ പൂർവ്വികയും ഫ്രാൻസിലെ രാജ്ഞിയും ആയിരുന്നു. ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ ഹെൻട്രി ഏഴാമന്റെയും യോർക്ക് എലിസബത്തിന്റെയും ഇളയ മകളായിരുന്ന മേരിക്ക് രാഷ്ട്രീയകാരണങ്ങളാൽ തന്നേക്കാൾ 30 വയസ്സിനു മേൽ പ്രായമുള്ള ഫ്രഞ്ചു രാജാവ് ലൂയി പന്ത്രണ്ടാമന്റെ മൂന്നാം ഭാര്യാപദം സ്വീകരിക്കേണ്ടിവന്നു. വിവാഹം കഴിഞ്ഞ് മൂന്നു മാസത്തിനകം ലൂയി പന്ത്രണ്ടാമൻ നിര്യാതനായി. ഭർത്താവിന്റെ മരണത്തെത്തുടർന്ന്, സഫോക്കിന്റെ ഒന്നാം പ്രഭു ചാൾസ് ബ്രാൻഡനെ മേരി വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. ഫ്രാൻസിൽവെച്ച് രഹസ്യമായാണ് ഇരുവരും വിവാഹിതരായത്. മേരിയുടെ സഹോദരനും ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ രാജാവുമായിരുന്ന ഹെൻട്രി എട്ടാമന്റെ സമ്മതമില്ലാതിരുന്നതായിരുന്നു മുഖ്യകാരണം. പിന്നീട് ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ ആർച് ബിഷപ് തോമസ് വോൾസിയുടെ ഇടപെടൽ മൂലം സഹോദരങ്ങൾ രമ്യതയിലെത്തി. ഹെൻ‌റി ദമ്പതികൾക്ക് മാപ്പുനൽകിയെങ്കിലും വലിയൊരു തുക പിഴ നൽകാൻ ബ്രാൻഡൻ ദമ്പതികൾ നിർബന്ധിതരായി.
