ക്രൈസ്തവസഭയിലെ ഒരു വിശുദ്ധനാണ് മഹാനായ വിശുദ്ധ ബസേലിയോസ് അഥവാ ബേസിൽ (329 - 379). പൗരസ്ത്യ സന്യാസികളുടെ പിതാവ് എന്നും ഇദ്ദേഹം അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. കുലീന കുടുംബത്തിൽ ജനിച്ച ബെയ്സിൽ ലളിത ജീവിതമായിരുന്നു നയിച്ചത്. സ്വന്തമായി വീട്ടു ജോലികൾ ചെയ്തും ഭക്ഷണം പാകം ചെയ്തുമാണ് ബാല്യകാലത്തിൽ ബെയ്സിൽ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നത്. വിശുദ്ധ ഗ്രിഗറി ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഒരു സഹോദരനാണ്. കൂടാതെ ബെസ്‌യിലിന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കളെയും മറ്റു മൂന്നു സഹോദരങ്ങളെയും വിശുദ്ധരായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
കോൺസ്റ്റാന്റിനോപ്പിളിലും ഏതൻസിലുമായി വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. ഈ കാലയളവിൽ ഏതൻസിൽ ജൂലിയൻ ചക്രവർത്തി ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹപാഠിയായിരുന്നു. കൂടാതെ വിശുദ്ധ ഗ്രിഗറി നസിയാൻസെൻ എന്ന വ്യക്തിയും ഇദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം വിദ്യ അഭ്യസിച്ചിരുന്നു. ബെയ്സിലും ഗ്രിഗറിയും ചേർന്ന് പിന്നീട് ഒരു വിദ്യാലയം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ഇരുവരും അവിടെ അദ്ധ്യാപനവും നടത്തി. എങ്കിലും ആർഭാടജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് ജീവിതം വഴിതിരിയാതിരിക്കുവാനായി ബെയ്സൽ ഈ ജോലി ഉപേഷിക്കുകയും ഏകാന്തവാസം ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനെ ഭക്ത്യാദരപൂർവ്വമുള്ള ജീവിതം ശ്രദ്ധയിൽപ്പെട്ട സേസരെയായിലെ മെത്രാൻ ബെയ്സലിനെ പുരോഹിതനാകാൻ ക്ഷണിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് എ.ഡി. 364-ൽ പൗരോഹിത്യം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. 370 - ൽ മെത്രാൻ സ്ഥാനവും ലഭിച്ചു. ക്രിസ്തുമത പ്രചാരണത്തിനായി വളരെയധികം പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിരുന്ന ബെയ്സൽ 379-ൽ അന്തരിച്ചു.
