ഏഷ്യൻ വൻകരയിലെ ചരിത്രപ്രസിദ്ധവും സാംസ്കാരിക പ്രസക്തിയുമുള്ളതായ ദീർഘപാതയാണ് സിൽക്ക് റോഡ് അഥവാ പട്ടുത്തുന്നിപ്പാത . ഒറ്റപ്പാതയല്ലാത്ത ഇത് നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി ചവിട്ടി പോന്ന വിവിധ പാതകളുടെ സമുച്ചയമാണിത്. ഏഷ്യാ വൻകരയുടെ കിഴക്കും പടിഞ്ഞാറും തമ്മിലുള്ള കച്ചവട ബന്ധവും, സാംസ്കാരികവിനിമയവും നടന്നു പോയത് ഈ വഴികളിലൂടെയാണ്. മെഡിറ്ററേനിയൻ, ഏഷ്യാമൈനർ പ്രദേശങ്ങളെ ചൈനയുമായി ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചത് സിൽക്ക് റൂട്ടാണ്; കടലും കരയും താണ്ടി നീളുന്ന 8000 കിലോമീറ്റർ. ഹാൻ വംശത്തിന്റെ കാലത്ത് 114 ബി.സി.യിലാണ് ഇത്ര തുടർച്ചയായുള്ള സിൽക്ക് റൂട്ട് ആരംഭിച്ചത് എന്ന് കരുതുന്നു. ചൈന, ജപ്പാൻ, ഈജിപ്റ്റ്‌, പേർഷ്യ, ഇന്ത്യ ഉപഭൂഖന്ധം എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ മഹത്തായ സംസ്കാരങ്ങൾ ഈ വഴി വഹിച്ച പങ്ക് വലുതാണ്‌.
