പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലേതെന്ന് അനുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു പുരാവൃത്തത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി പതിനേഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ സർ കെന്നെൽ ഡിഗ്ബി രചിച്ച ബ്രോഡ്സ്റ്റൺ ഓഫ് ഓണർ എന്ന കൃതിയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന് ആധാരം. കൃതിയിലെ നായകനായ ഫ്ലോറൻസിലെ ജോൺ ഗ്വാൽബർട്ട് ( ഇറ്റാലിയൻ ഭാഷയിൽ ജീവാനി ഗാൽബെർട്ടോ- Giovanni Gualberto) എന്ന യോദ്ധാവ്, തൻറെ സഹോദരനെ നശിപ്പിച്ച ശത്രുവിനോട് ക്ഷമിക്കുകയും ആ പ്രവൃത്തിയിൽ സന്തുഷ്ടനായ ക്രിസ്തു ജീവാനിയെ ചുംബിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നാണ് പുരാവൃത്തം. ഈ സന്ദർഭത്തെ ബർൺ-ജോൺസ് സ്വന്തം ഭാവനാശൈലിയിൽ ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.^[2]
