അറ്റ്ലാന്റിക് സമുദ്രത്തിലെ ഒരു ചെറു ദ്വീപാണ് ഡെവിൾസ് ദ്വീപ് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ചെകുത്താന്റെ ദ്വീപ്. മണൽക്കാടുകളും പാറക്കെട്ടുകളും നിറഞ്ഞ ഈ ദ്വീപ് ഉത്തര ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഗയാനയുടെ ഭാഗമാണ്. വിസ്തീർണം: 40 ച.കി.മീ. ഈ ദ്വീപും റോയൽ, സെന്റ് ജോസഫ് ദ്വീപുകളും ചേർന്ന സേഫ്റ്റി ഐലൻഡ്സ് (Safety Islands) ദ്വീപസമൂഹം മുൻകാലത്ത് 'ഡെവിൾസ് ഐലൻഡ്സ്' എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. തെക്കെ അമേരിക്കയിൽ ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഗയാനാ തീരത്തു നിന്ന് ഉദ്ദേശം 13 കി.മീ. അകലെയാണ് ഡെവിൾസ് ഐലൻഡിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം.

1852 മുതൽ 1946 വരെ ഈ ദ്വീപിലും ഫ്രഞ്ചു ഗയാനയുടെ ചില ഭാഗങ്ങളിലുമായി കുപ്രസിദ്ധിയാർജിച്ച ഒരു തടവുകേന്ദ്രം നിലവിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. വിവിധ വിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽപ്പെട്ട കുറ്റവാളികളെയാണ് ഇവിടെ പാർപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത്. അനാരോഗ്യകരമായ കാലാവസ്ഥ മൂലം മിക്ക തടവുകാരും ഇവിടെ വച്ചുതന്നെ മരണപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. 1895-ൽ ഫ്രഞ്ച് സൈനിക തലവനായിരുന്ന ആൽഫ്രഡ് ഡ്രേഫസ് (Alfred Dreyfus) ഇവിടെയെത്തിയതോടെയാണ് ഇവിടത്തെ തടവുകേന്ദ്രത്തിന്റെ ഭീകരമുഖം ലോകം അറിഞ്ഞത്.

1930-കളിൽ ഫ്രഞ്ചു ഭരണകൂടത്തിന്റെ നിർദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം ഇവിടെ എത്തിയ ഫ്രഞ്ച് സാൽവേഷൻ ആർമിയുടെ ഒരു സംഘമാണ് ഡെവിൾസ് ഐലൻഡിലെ സ്ഥിതിഗതികൾ മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തുവാനുള്ള ആദ്യ ശ്രമങ്ങളാരംഭിച്ചത്. 1938-ൽ ഇവിടേക്ക് തടവുകാരെ നാടു കടത്തുന്നത് നിറുത്തലാക്കുകയും 1946-ൽ തടവുകേന്ദ്രം അടച്ചുപൂട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു.
