ടമ്മനി സൊസൈറ്റി
അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിലെ ന്യൂയോർക്ക് നഗരത്തിൽ പത്തൊൻപതാം ശതകത്തിലും ഇരുപതാം ശതകത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യപകുതിയിലും ഡെമോക്രാറ്റിക് പാർട്ടിയിൽ നിർണായക സ്വാധീനത ചെലുത്തിയിരുന്ന ഒരു സംഘടനയാണ് ടമ്മനി സൊസൈറ്റി.
ചരിത്രം
[തിരുത്തുക]ഒരു ദേശീയ സാമൂഹിക സംഘടനയെന്ന നിലയിൽ 1789-ൽ ഇതു രൂപം കൊണ്ടു. ജനാധിപത്യ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനുവേണ്ടിയും ഫെഡറലിസ്റ്റ് പാർട്ടിയുടെ അഭിജാതസിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾക്കെതിരായും നിലകൊള്ളുന്ന ഒരു ധർമസ്ഥാപനമെന്ന (charitable society) നിലയിലാണ് ഈ സംഘടന സ്ഥാപിതമായത്. കാലാന്തരത്തിൽ ദേശീയസ്വഭാവം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് ഇതിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനം ന്യൂയോർക്ക് നഗരത്തിൽ മാത്രമായി ചുരുങ്ങുകയും ഡെമോക്രാറ്റിക് പാർട്ടിയെ സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്ന സംഘടനയെന്ന നിലയിൽ ഇതു രാഷ്ട്രീയവൽക്കരിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ന്യൂയോർക്ക് മേയറായിരുന്ന ഫെർനാൻഡോവുഡ്ഡിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൻകീഴിൽ സൊസൈറ്റി 1850-കളിൽ രാഷ്ട്രീയരംഗത്ത് പ്രബലമായി. എന്നാൽ 1868-ൽ വില്യം എം. ട്വീഡ് നേതൃത്വത്തിലെത്തിയതോടെ സൊസൈറ്റി ധാർമികമായ അധഃപതനത്തിനു വിധേയമായി. അതിനുള്ളിൽ അഴിമതിയും സ്വേച്ഛാധിപത്യവും വ്യാപകമായിത്തീരുകയും ചെയ്തു. റിച്ചാർഡ് ക്രോക്കർ, ചാൾസ് ഫ്രാൻ സിസ് മർഫി, ആൽഫ്രഡ് ഇ. സ്മിത്ത്, ജെയിംസ്. ജെ. വാക്കർ തുടങ്ങിയവർ സൊസൈറ്റിയുടെ പ്രമുഖ നേതാക്കളായിരുന്നു. 1930 ആയപ്പോഴേക്കും സൊസൈറ്റിയുടെ പ്രതാപം നശിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. തുടർന്നിങ്ങോട്ടുള്ള ദശകങ്ങൾ സംഘടനയുടെ ശിഥിലീകരണത്തിനാണ് സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിച്ചത്. 1961-ലെ മേയർ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ ഡെമോക്രാറ്റിക് നേതാവായ കാർമൈൻ സാപിയോയുടെ പരാജയത്തോടെ സൊസൈറ്റി തീർത്തും നിഷ്പ്രഭമായി.
നേതാക്കൾ
[തിരുത്തുക]ഡെലവേർ ഗോത്രത്തിന്റെ തലവനായ ടമ്മനെന്റിന്റെ ബഹുമാനാർഥമാണ് 'ടമ്മനി സൊസൈറ്റി' എന്ന പേര് ഈ സംഘടനയ്ക്കു നൽകപ്പെട്ടത്. മേധാശക്തിയും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവാഞ്ഛയും കൊണ്ട് ഇതിഹാസപുരുഷതുല്യനായി പരിഗണിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഒരു വ്യക്തിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം. ഒരു സൈനികനായിരുന്ന വില്യം മൂണി ആയിരുന്നു സൊസൈറ്റിയുടെ സ്ഥാപകൻ.
ആസ്ഥാനം
[തിരുത്തുക]സംഘടനയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനമായ ടമ്മനി ഹാളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് പിൽക്കാലത്ത് 'ടമ്മനി ഹാൾ' എന്ന പേരിലും ഈ സംഘടന അറിയപ്പെട്ടുവരുന്നു. അഭിജാതപ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ നേർക്കുള്ള പരിഹാസം ദ്യോതിപ്പിക്കാനായി, സംഘടനയിലെ സ്ഥാനപ്പേരുകൾ കുറിക്കാൻ ഗോത്രപദങ്ങളാണ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത്.
