ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരമാണ് ജൊഹാനസ്ബർഗ്[10]. രാജ്യത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും സമ്പന്നമായ പ്രവിശ്യയായ ഹൌടെങിൻറെ തലസ്ഥാനവുമാണീ നഗരം[11]. ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ 40 മെട്രൊപൊളിറ്റൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങകളിലൊന്ന്, ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ രണ്ട് ആഗോള നഗരങ്ങളിലൊന്ന് (global cities) തുടങ്ങിയ പദവികളും ജൊഹാനസ്ബർഗിനുണ്ട്. ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയുടെ മൂന്ന് തലസ്ഥാന നഗരങ്ങളിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും രാജ്യത്തെ പരമോന്നത നീതിന്യായ കോടതി ജൊഹാനസ്ബർഗിലാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
സ്വർണം, വജ്രം എന്നിവയുടെ ഒരു വൻ സ്രോതസ്സാണ് ജൊഹാൻസബർഗ്. ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലുതും ഏറ്റവും തിരക്കേറിയതുമായ ഒ.ആർ. ടാംബോ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വിമാനത്താവളം ഇവിടെയാണുള്ളത്.
2007-ൽ നടന കണക്കെടുപ്പ് പ്രകാരം ജൊഹാനസ്ബർഗ് മുൻസിപ്പൽ നഗരത്തിലെ ജനസംഖ്യ 3,888,180 ആണ്. ഗ്രേറ്റർ ജൊഹാനസ്ബർഗ് മെട്രൊപൊളിറ്റൻ പ്രദേശത്തിലെ ജനസംഖ്യ 7,151,447 ആണ്. മുൻസിപ്പൽ നഗരത്തിന്റെ വിസ്തൃതി 1,645 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്ററാണ്. മറ്റ് നഗരങ്ങളുമായി താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ഇത് വളരെ ഉയർന്നതായതിനാൽ ഇവിടുത്തെ ജനസാന്ദ്രത ഇടത്തരമാണ് (2,364/ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ).
