ഗ്രീക്ക് (ελληνική γλώσσα IPA: [eliniˈci ˈɣlosa] അല്ലെങ്കിൽ എളുപ്പത്തിൽ ελληνικά IPA: [eliniˈka] — "ഹെല്ലെനിക്ക്") എന്നത് 6,746 വർഷത്തെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ ചരിത്രമുള്ള, ഇൻഡോ-യൂറോപ്യൻ ഭാഷകളിൽ വച്ച് ഏറ്റവും പഴക്കമുള്ള, ഭാഷയാണ്. ഇന്ന്, ഗ്രീസ്, സൈപ്രസ്, അൽബേനിയ, ബൾഗേറിയ, മാസിഡോണിയ, ഇറ്റലി, തുർക്കി, അർമേനിയ, ജോർജ്ജിയ, യുക്രെയിൻ, മൊൾഡോവ, റുമാനിയ, റഷ്യ, ഈജിപ്റ്റ്, ജോർദ്ദാൻ എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ താമസിക്കുന്ന ധാരാളം പേരും, ഓസ്ട്രേലിയ, അമേരിക്ക, ജർമനി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ കുടിയേറിപ്പാർത്തവരും ഉൾപ്പെടെ ഏതാണ്ട് 150-250 ലക്ഷം ജനങ്ങൾ ഗ്രീക്ക് സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരായുണ്ട്. ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പഴയ ഭാഷകളിലൊന്നാണ് ഗ്രീക്ക്. ലോകത്ത് ദൃശ്യമാകുന്ന ആദ്യ ഭാഷയാണിത്. ഒരു ഭാഷയെ ലോകമാക്കി മാറ്റുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ ഭാഷയായിരുന്നു അത്.

ഗ്രീക്ക് അക്ഷരമാല(ആദ്യമായി സ്വരാക്ഷരങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയ) ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് ക്രി. മു. 9ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടു മുതൽ ഗ്രീസിലും, ക്രി. മു. 4ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുമുതൽ സൈപ്രസിലും, ഗ്രീക്ക് എഴുതിപ്പോരുന്നത്. ഗ്രീക്ക് സാഹിത്യത്തിന് മൂവായിരം വർഷത്തോളം ഉള്ള ഇടമുറിയാത്ത ചരിത്രമുണ്ട്.

അലക്സാണ്ടറുടെ ഏഷ്യയിലേക്കുള്ള ആക്രമണങ്ങളുടെ തുടർച്ചയായി കിഴക്ക് അഫ്ഘാനിസ്താൻ വരെയുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഗ്രീക്കിന്റെ ഉപയോഗം വ്യാപകമായിരുന്നു. ഗ്രീക്കിലെഴുതിയ അശോകന്റെ ശിലാശാസനങ്ങൾ അഫ്ഘാനിസ്താനിൽ കന്ദഹാർ പ്രദേശത്തു നിന്നും ലഭ്യമായിട്ടുണ്ട്^[4]‌.
