കർണ്ണാടകസംഗീതത്തിലെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു രാഗമാണ് കാംബോജി (Kambhoji/Kambodhi/Kamboji).^[1] ഹരികാംബോജി മേളത്തിൽ ജന്യമായ കാംബോജി കച്ചേരികളിൽ പ്രധാനരാഗമായി പാടാറുണ്ട്. നേരത്തെ ഈ രാഗം കാംബോജ അന്നും കാംഭോജ എന്നുമെല്ലാം അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു.^[2] പുരാതനതമിഴിൽ (3BCE) തക്കേശിപൺ എന്നാണ് ഇത് അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്.

വലിയ നാല് മേളരാഗങ്ങളായ തോഡി, ഖരഹരപ്രിയ, ശങ്കരാഭരണം, കല്യാണി എന്നിവയ്ക്കൊപ്പം സ്ഥാനമുള്ള ഒരു രാഗമാണ് കാംബോജി. വിശദമായ ആലാപനത്തിന് സാധ്യതയുള്ള കാംബോജി കച്ചേരികളിലെ പ്രധാനകൃതികൾ അവതരിക്കാൻ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാറുണ്ട്. താനം പാടാനും പല്ലവി പാടാനും നല്ല രാഗമാണിത്. ഏതുലയത്തിലും കാംബോജി പാടാം. ജനകീയരാഗമായതിനാൽ എല്ലാത്തരം കോമ്പോസിഷനുകളും കാംബോജിയിൽ ഉണ്ട്. എല്ലാ വാഗ്ഗേയകാരന്മാരും മികച്ച കൃതികൾ കാംബോജിയിൽ രചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മംഗളകരമായരാഗമായികരുതുന്നതിനാൽ കച്ചേരിയുടെ തുടക്കത്തിലും കാംബോജി ആലപിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ക്ഷേത്രഉൽസവങ്ങളിൽ നാഗസ്വരത്തിൽ കാംബോജി ദീർഘമായി ആലപിക്കാറുണ്ട്.കൂടാതെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കുറുങ്കുഴൽ കലാകാരന്മാരുടെ കഴിവ് തെളിയിക്കുന്ന അവസരമായ കുഴൽപറ്റ് കാംബോജി രാഗത്തിലാണ് അധികവും വായിക്കുക.

ധനിനിധ എന്ന പ്രയോഗത്തിൽ ത്രിശ്രുതിധൈവതവും സനിപധസരിഗ എന്ന പ്രയോഗത്തിൽ ചതുശ്രുതിധൈവതവും രാഗത്തിനു ഭംഗി നൽകുന്നുണ്ട്. ഏഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ സംഗീതമകരന്ദം മുതലായ കൃതികളിൽ പരാമർശിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള കാംബോജി പല ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന പുരാതനരാഗമാണ്. 16 -ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുവരെ ഒരു മേളരാഗമായിത്തന്നെ കരുതപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന കാംബോജി അന്യസ്വരപ്രയോഗമുള്ളതിനാൽ വെങ്കടമഖി അതിനെ ഹരികാംബോജിയുടെ ജന്യരാഗമായി പരിഗണിച്ചു.^[3]
