누클레아리아류육질충류에 속하는 분류군의 일종으로[1] 실같은 위족을 지니고 있으며, 주로 토양과 담수에서 발견된다. 원반 모양의 돌기가 있는 미토콘드리아를 지닌 밤피렐라류(Vampyrellidae)와는 모양은 비슷하지만 다르다.

특징

누클레아리아류는 일반적으로 작고, 크기는 약 50 μm정도이다.

2009년의 한 논문에 의하면, 세포성 점균류의 일종인 폰티쿨라속(Fonticula)은 후편모생물의 일종이며 균류보다는 누클레아리아속과 더 밀접한 관계에 있다.[3]
