Banyak dianggap sebagai salah satu adikarya besar dari era film bisu, serta salah satu film seni pertama,^[3] film epik tiga setengah jam tersebut memiliki empat cerita yang saling berhubungan, masing-masing dipisahkan oleh beberapa abad: (1) melodrama kontemporer kejahatan dan penebusan, (2) sebuah kisah Yudea: misi Yesus dan kematian-Nya, (3) sebuah kisah Prancis: peristiwa menjelang pembantaian Hari Santo Bartolomeus tahun 1572, dan (4) sebuah kisah Babilonia: kejatuhan Kekaisaran Babilonia atas Persia pada tahun 539 SM. Setiap cerita memiliki tinta warna khasnya sendiri dalam cetakan asli.^[3]
