מספר הגופים המוגדרים כוכבי לכת במערכת השמש השתנה מספר פעמים במהלך 500 השנים האחרונות. חמישה מהם היו ידועים עוד משחר ההיסטוריה: כוכב חמה, נוגה, מאדים, צדק ושבתאי, ולצדם גם הירח והשמש נחשבו כוכבי לכת במודל הגאוצנטרי. עם קבלת המודל ההליוצנטרי במאה ה-16 נוסף כדור הארץ לרשימת כוכבי הלכת, והשמש והירח הוסרו ממנה. עם גילוים של אורנוס, נפטון וכמה אסטרואידים תפחה הרשימה עד כדי 23 כוכבי לכת ב-1851. ב-1852 הוסרו כל האסטרואידים ונותרו שמונה כוכבי לכת, שאליהם נוסף פלוטו ב-1930. ב-2006 החליט האיגוד האסטרונומי הבינלאומי לשנות את ההגדרה של כוכב לכת והגדיר סוג חדש – כוכב לכת ננסי, הגדרה שבה נכללים קֶרֶס, פלוטו, אריס, האומיה ומאקה-מאקה. כיום ידועים לאסטרונומים יותר מ-150,000 גופים הסובבים את השמש, והם מסווגים בקטגוריות שונות: כוכבי לכת, כוכבי לכת ננסיים, גופים טרנס-נפטוניים, אסטרואידים, שביטים, קנטאורים ועוד גופים קטנים במערכת השמש.
