יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה נקבע לכ"ז בניסן, על אף שבתאריך עברי זה לא אירע כל אירוע ראוי לציון. בשנותיה הראשונות של מדינת ישראל התנהל דיון בשאלה איזה יום בשנה יוכל לסמל את תקופת שנות השואה. הגישה באותה תקופה הייתה להלל את האתוס היהודי הלוחם, שנאבק בנאצים, ולשם כך רצו לייחד את יום השנה לפרוץ מרד גטו ורשה. אולם המרד בוורשה פרץ ב-19 באפריל 1943, י"ד בניסן, ערב חג הפסח ה'תש"ג, וערב חג הפסח איננו תאריך מתאים ליום זיכרון לאומי. לבסוף הוחלט לקבוע את כ"ז בניסן, שישה ימים לאחר תום חג הפסח ושבוע לפני יום הזיכרון לחללי צה"ל, תאריך שהוא קרוב מספיק ליום פרוץ מרד גטו ורשה, אך גם חלק מתקופת ספירת העומר, בעלת ההקשר לאבלות במסורת היהודית. יום הזיכרון הבינלאומי לשואה נקבע על ידי האו"ם רק בשנת 2005. התאריך שנבחר הוא 27 בינואר, היום בו שוחרר מחנה ההשמדה אושוויץ בידי הצבא האדום.
