A dos escafirrinquinos (Scaphirhynchinae) é a máis pequena das dúas subfamilias en que se divide a familia dos acipenséridos, xa que comprende dous xéneros cun total de tan só seis especies.[1][2]

Características

Un dos xéneros é propio de Norteamérica, e o outro de Asia Central, e comprenden tres especies cada un. Estes peixes teñen un rostrum prolongado, tubular, e carecen de espiráculo.

Probabelmente non sexan un grupo monofilético, xa que inclúen formas ananas próximas aos acipenserinos (Grande e Bemis, 1991).[3]

As especies asiáticas son relativamente pequenas, de tan só de 27 a 70 cm de lonxitude, en comparación con enormes tamaños dos verdadeiros esturións. Son endémicas dos ríos Amu Daria e Sir Daria, que desembocan no mar de Aral, e as tres especies están consideradas en perigo de extinción.
