O novial é un idioma artificial creado polo destacado lingüista danés Otto Jespersen co fin de facilitar a comunicación entre os pobos. A verba novial ven da combinación do prefixo nov (novo) e as iniciais do termo International Auxiliary Language (en galego: lingua auxiliar internacional; por conseguinte, novial significa nova lingua auxiliar internacional). Jespersen, quen previamente participara no deseño do idioma ido como substitución do esperanto, deseñou o novial a partir de palabras de linguas romances e xermánicas e unha gramática similar á da lingua inglesa e linguas xermánicas.
