O mawayana está clasificado como en perigo crítico polo Libro Vermello das Linguas Ameazadas da UNESCO[4]

A lingua mawayana (mahuayana), tamén coñecida como mapidiana (maopidyán), é unha lingua moribunda da familia arauaca, falada no norte de América do Sur. É falada polo pobo mawayana que vive nas vilas das etnias waiwai e tiriyó no Brasil, Güiana e Suriname.[5][2] No ano 2015, só quedaban dous falantes da lingua vivindo na vila de Kwamalasamutu.[6][2]

Clasificación

Aikhenvald (1999) clasifica a lingua mawayana (e posiblemente o mawakwa como dialecto) xunto coa lingua wapishana no subgrupo de linguas pidjanas (río Branco) da familia lingüística arauaca. Carl-in (2006:314) sinala que o mawayana "está estreitamente relacionado co wapishana" e segundo Ramirez (2001:530) comparten cando menos o 47% do seu léxico.
