DescriptionThe Dalai Lama opens art exhibit in Tokyo, 1967.jpg
English:
The 14th Dalai Lama, pictured in Japan in 1967, is making his first foreign visit since he moved to India in 1959. Here, he is attending a Tibetan art exhibition in Tokyo, sponsored by Matsutarō Shōriki (the owner of Yomiuri Shimbun) and the Indian government.
The exhibit was held from 26 September to 5 October 1967 at the Matsuzakaya Department store in Ueno, Tokyo. On display are more than 250 Buddhist statues, paintings, swords and other rare works of art.
The Japanese government under Prime Minister Eisaku Satō permitted him a two-week visit on the condition that he would not make any political attacks on the People's Republic of China which might hurt Japan's trade relations.
