Toriumtrikloridi on kiteinen yhdiste, jota voidaan valmistaa alumiinin avulla toriumtetrakloridista 430 °C lämpötilassa.[3] Toriumtrikloridille on ajateltu olevan käyttöä kaksoisfluidireaktorissa reaktoripolttoaineena.

This compound is a strong reducing agent and decomposes water giving off hydrogen. Above 630 °C thorium trichloride dissociates into the dichloride and tetrachloride."
