Mater rhyngseryddol yw'r deunydd, nwy Hydrogen a llwch yn bennaf, sydd i'w cael yn y gofod rhwng sêr ein galaeth ni (y Llwybr Llaethog) ac sy'n neilltuol o ddwys rhwng ei freichiau troellog.

Fe'i ceir ar ffurf cymylau ionedig poeth, er enghraifft, rhanbarthau rhyngseryddol llai dwys ac oerach, neu gymylau dwys o hidrogen moleciwlar a moleciwlau eraill. Yn ogystal ceir cronynnau llwch yn y gofod ledled y galaeth.

Credir fod y llwch a nwy hyn yn tarddu o hen sêr, gweddillion supernovae. Mae rhai o'r cymylau mater rhyngseryddol yn feithrinfeydd sêr newydd.

Field, Goldsmith & Habing (1969) oedd y cyntaf i sgwennu papur ar y mater hwn, gyda McKee & Ostriker (1977) yn ychwanegu'r drydedd rhan.[1] Y prif arbenigwr yng Nghymru ar fater rhyngseryddol a'i astudiaeth yw'r athro Chandra Wickramasinghe, sy'n gweithio yng Nghaerdydd.
