Paket kommutasiyası (packet switching) – verilənlərin elə ötürülmə üsuludur ki, göndərən və alan arasında kiçik informasiya vahidləri (paketləri) optimal marşrutla kompüter şəbəkənin stansiyasından keçməklə retranslyasiya olunur. Paket kommutasiyası şəbəkəsində informasiya kiçik porsiyalarla emal olunur; uzun məlumatlar marşrutlanmadan öncə bir neçə paketə ayrılır. Hər bir paket fərqli yollarla ötürülə bildiyindən və bir məlumatın ibarət olduğu paketlər son məntəqəyə müxtəlif vaxtlarda, yaxud fərqli ardıcıllıqla çata bildiyindən, qəbuledici kompüter ilkin məlumatı yenidən qurur. Məlumatların paketlənməsi paketlərin qurulması və sökülməsi adlanır (PACKET ASSEMBLY AND DISSEMBLY, PAD). Paket kommutasiyalı şəbəkələr ən sürətli və səmərəli hesab olunur. Trafikin marşrutlanmasının və paketlərin qurulub-sökülməsinin idarə edilməsi üçün belə şəbəkələr ötürmə prosesini idarə edən kompüterlərin və proqram təminatlarının müəyyən “intellektə” malik olmasını tələb edir. Şəbəkədə paket kommutasiyası CCITT komitəsinin X.25 tövsiyəsində sənədləşdirilib.
