Die Oos-Ghats (Engels: Eastern Ghats; Hindi: पूर्वी घाट, Pūrvī Ghāṭa; Telugu: తూర్పు కనుమలు, Tūrpu Kanumalu; Tamil: கிழக்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலைகள், Kiḻakkut Toṭarcci Malaikaḷ) is 'n bergreeks langs die ooskus van Indië. Dit loop parallel tot die kus van die Golf van Bengale deur die Indiese deelstate Odisha, Andhra Pradesh en Tamil Nadu. Arma Konda is met 1 680 meter bo seevlak die hoogste bergpiek van die Oos-Ghats.

Die Oos-Ghats word in die noorde deur die Mahanadirivier begrens. Van die riviere wat die Oos-Ghats deurkruis sluit in Godavari en Krisjna. Albei riviere ontspring in die Wes-Ghats en mond in die Golf van Bengale uit.

Etimologie

Die term ghat word in verskeie Drawidiese tale soos Kannada gaati en ghatta (bergreeks), Tulu gatta (heuwel), Tamil kattu (dam, rif, kant van ’n berg, verhoogde pad of brug) en Telugu katta en gattu (dam, oewer) gebruik.[1]

Ghat, 'n term wat in die Indiese subkontinent gebruik word, kan afhangende van die konteks na 'n bergreeks of trap-heuwel soos die Oos-Ghats en Wes-Ghats verwys; of die reeks trappe wat aflei na 'n waterliggaam of kaai, asook na 'n bad of verassingplek langs die oewers van 'n rivier of dam, Ghats in Benares, Dhoby Ghaut of Aapravasi Ghat.[2][3] Paaie wat deur die ghats loop word Ghatpaaie genoem.
