相比多數只居於深宮的歷代皇帝來說，秦始皇的足跡幾乎踏遍全國各地。自秦王政13年（公元前234年）親自巡視河南起，始皇分別在秦王政19年（公元前228年）及秦王政23年（公元前224年）再親身出巡邯鄲及郢陳，其主要目的是為了鎮懾反秦勢力。

正值秦始皇消滅六國之後一年（公元前220年），秦始皇亦親自巡視其祖宗起源之地[1]:48-58的隴西郡（現甘粛省東南）及北地郡（現甘粛省慶陽市寧縣），目的可能向歷代祖先禱告自己六國的功績。
