Eleven partner nations from the U.S. and Latin America are supporting the largest multilateral exercise in the Southern Hemisphere. Held Since 1959, UNITAS aims to unite military forces throughout the Americas with bilateral and multilateral shipboard, amphibious and in-port exercises and operations. UNITAS improves operational readiness and interoperability of U.S. and South American naval, coast guard, and marine forces while promoting friendship, professionalism and understanding among participants. CARQUIN, PERU (July 07, 2004) - Yeoman third class Monique Hoilett (from Queens, N.Y.) and yeoman second class Clarissa Lee (from Red Mesa, AZ) apply fresh paint to the chalkboards at the local school. South American and U.S. Navy sailors participating in UNITAS 45-04 united in a local village school and playground made repairs and delivered donations to the people of the village. This year's exercise marks the first multi-national amphibious phase with participation from 11 countries. UNITAS helps people in the fight against poverty with increased partnerships with the local community. Humanitarian projects aim to improve the local community, health, education and sports, while improving operational readiness and interoperability of U.S. and South American Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps forces.
