Philip III of Habsburg was King of Spain 1598 to 1621. Here he is seen wearing black armour with the order of the Golden Fleece around his neck. In his right hand he holds a baton which is pointed at the globe on the checkered floor. The portrait is similar in composition to the knee-length portrait of Philip III executed by Andres Lopez in 1617, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The portrait was most likely taken from Prague as war booty by the Swedish army in 1648.
