分类
本科过去在1982年的克朗奎斯特分类法中被归类为藤黄科（Clusiaceae）[2]。
1998年依分子学研究而建立的被子植物APG分类法将本科列为独立的科，并在随后的2003年APG II、2009年APG III与2016年APG IV中获得确认[3]。
现在已知川苔草科（Podostemaceae）是现存植物中与本科关系最密切的姐妹群，其次为胡桐科（Calophyllaceae），然后才是泽茶科（Bonnetiaceae）与藤黄科 [4]。
全球植物名錄承認金絲桃科下的9個屬和約700個物種，除了極度寒冷或乾燥的地區以外，該科的成員遍布世界各地。該科的大多數屬主要分佈於熱帶地區，但金絲桃屬和紅花金絲桃屬亦見於溫帶地區。[5]
