腔骨龙超科是群生存于三叠纪晚期至侏罗纪早期较常见的恐龙,它们的地理分布非常广泛,可能生存于每个大陆。腔骨龙超科是肉食性动物,体型修长,外表类似虚骨龙类,有些种的头顶有易碎的冠饰;腔骨龙超科之前被分类于虚骨龙类。腔骨龙超科恐龙的身长范围从1到6公尺。目前仍不清楚腔骨龙超科的外表覆盖物,不同的艺术家将它们绘画成布满鳞片,或是覆盖者羽毛。在某些挖掘地点发现了众多的个体化石聚集在一起,因此有些种被推测可能以小群体方式生活。

著名的腔骨龙超科恐龙包括:腔骨龙、原美颌龙,以及哥斯拉龙。大多数原先被分类于快足龙科的恐龙,现在被分类于腔骨龙超科。

尽管腔骨龙超科在化石纪录上出现的时间很早,它们仍拥有许多的衍化特征,将它们与原始兽脚亚目恐龙区别开来。在这些衍化特征中最重要的一个是上颌的骨头连接方式(前上颌骨与上颌骨之间的关节),这两块骨头上的牙齿间,形成一道可弯曲的缝隙。腔骨龙超科最常被兽脚亚目专家提起的一个争议,即是角鼻龙下目与腔骨龙超科拥有较近的共同祖先,还是角鼻龙下目与其他兽脚亚目恐龙拥有较近的共同祖先。大部分近期研究倾向于后者,腔骨龙超科、角鼻龙下目是两个独立的演化支。 双脊龙科曾经长期被归类于腔骨龙超科,但根据近年的研究,双脊龙科可能较接近于坚尾龙类。[1]
