真盤龍亞目（Eupelycosauria）起初指的是盤龍目的一個亞目，但現在重新定義為真盤龍類，是合弓動物的一個演化支，包括大多數盤龍類、獸孔目、哺乳類。牠們首次出現於石炭紀晚期（早賓夕法尼亞紀），例如：始祖單弓獸（Archaeothyris），以及可能更早的Protoclepsydrops，與牠們的早期羊膜動物祖先相比，真盤龍類代表哺乳類演化階段中的某一階段。將真盤龍類與卡色龍亞目區別的共有衍徵，是根據頭顱骨中特定骨頭的比例細節。這些特徵包括：長而狹窄的上顳骨（卡色龍類的上顳骨幾乎是跟其長度一樣寬），額骨與眼眶上緣的接觸面較寬。
演化
在晚石炭紀到早二疊紀這段期間，許多真盤龍類（不包含獸孔目）是陸地的優勢動物。蛇齒龍科在晚石炭紀到早二疊紀是常見動物，但牠們體型逐漸變小。基龍科與非真盤龍類的卡色龍科，是晚石炭紀到早二疊紀的優勢草食性動物，體型從豬到犀牛大小。最著名的基龍類是基龍，基龍身長3到4公尺，是具有背帆的大型草食性動物，背帆可能用來循環體溫或求偶。楔齒龍科可能會獵食基龍類與卡色龍類，牠們是早二疊紀時期的頂級掠食動物。楔齒龍類包括著名的異齒龍，牠常被誤認為是恐龍，是當時最大型的掠食動物。牠的體型可達3到4公尺。如同基龍，異齒龍背上也有獨特的背帆，可能也有同樣循環體溫的用途。所有真盤龍類的外表類似巨蜥，是冷血動物、四肢向兩側延展的羊膜動物。
與楔齒龍類親緣關係最親近的是獸孔目，首次出現於早二疊紀。事實上，楔齒龍科與獸孔目屬於楔齒龍類演化支，此演化支的特徵是狹窄而延長的頭顱。獸孔目比原始的真盤龍類更佔優勢，在二疊紀中晚期間成為陸地優勢動物。。獸孔目在三疊紀演化為第一種哺乳類。
