防御工事泛指一切軍事上增加防守方優勢的臨時或永久建築，例如要塞、城牆、壕溝、城堡、防空洞、障礙物等。

防御工事自古就是戰爭中防守方有形優勢的主要來源，因為只有防守方能擁有，而攻擊方無法擁有，以逸待勞是防禦工事的存在條件之一，因此建築地點必須是假想戰爭中敵軍可能進攻或經過的路線上，防禦工事的劣勢在於無法便利的搬動（或是無法移動）所以若是戰略構想錯誤，建築在錯誤位置則毫無用處，例如法國的馬奇諾防線因為被繞過而未發揮效益。
