拍马屁，意思是为得到对方的欢心，对自己的抬爱或其他原因而不顾客观实际地谄媚、赞美或奉承对方。例如某些公司职员会拍其领导的马屁来获取领导对自己的信任和提拔。善于拍马屁的人通常称为“马屁精”。

相传，蒙古族的牧民们常以养得骏马为荣。人们牵着马相遇时，常要拍拍对方马的屁股，附上几声“好马”的称赞。有的人，为博得马主人的欢心，不管别人的马的优劣，都称赞其为“好马”。“拍马屁”的寓意便由此而来。
