南猿，又稱南方古猿類，是指兩個非常接近的人亞族：
南猿的祖先有可能是440萬年前的地猿。人屬有可能是於350萬年前由南猿的祖先，即肯尼亞平臉人演化而來。其他可能的祖先包括乍得沙赫人和圖根原人。另一個可能性是人屬直接由地猿演化，但卻沒有發現與南猿同期的中間生物。
