俞明德為靜宜大學講座教授，也是陽明交通大學終身講座教授、清華大學榮譽講座教授、國家科學及技術委員會特約研究人員。畢業於台灣大學經濟系，並獲美國 Ohio State University 博士學位，專精於金融機構與風險管理之研究。其教育行政與學術研究經歷豐富，曾任靜宜大學校長、中國科技大學校長、台灣大學特聘教授、陽明交通大學管理學院院長、元智大學管理學院院長、中央大學財金系主任暨所長、美國 Drexel University 財務金融系客座教授，並曾榮獲日內瓦協會 (Geneva Association) 與國際保險協會 (International Insurance Society) 頒發的 Shin Research Excellent Award、「李國鼎管理獎章」、「馬偕加拿大研究獎」、台灣國科會傑出研究獎。
俞明德亦曾擔任「台灣風險與保險學會」理事長、「台灣財務工程學會」理事長、「亞洲風險與保險學會」理事、亞洲開發銀行顧問、台灣國家發展基金管理委員會委員、台灣金融重建基金管理委員會委員、台灣住宅地震保險基金董事、香港學術基金委員會(HKRGC)的外審委員、馬來西亞大學(UM)、拉曼大學(UTAR)的外部評鑑委員。
俞明德有超過60篇的SSCI/SCI著作見於國際學術期刊，其學術著作領域可分為四大類：保險、金融、會計與作業管理。在保險領域之學術論文發表涵蓋了目前所有保險與精算領域的國際期刊。在保險與精算領域之頂級期刊有六篇。其他領域之期刊如 Journal of Banking & Finance 有五篇、 Journal of Operational Research 有一篇均是以保險研究為主題之論文。發表主要國際學術期刊如下：
