一般引擎的设计,凸轮轴是直接控制气门的;而在搭载VTEC的双凸轮轴(DOHC)引擎中,控制进气气门的凸轮轴有两组不同角度的凸轮,凸轮轴不直接控制汽门,而是透过一多段式摇臂来推动汽门,此摇臂内有二个受油压控制的插销(上面的插销分为二段;下面的则分成三段),经由此二个插销的移动可控制此摇臂是分成多段移动还是整个移动,在低转速时让较大角度凸轮对应的摇臂空转,以较小角度的凸轮推动气门,当转速到达设定的临界点,插销移动,以固定整个摇臂,让较大角度的凸轮推动整个摇臂,而较小角度的凸轮会因碰不到摇臂而空转,以达到两段式控制气门正时和扬程的目的。

而在低转速时使用角度较小的的凸轮,得到较小的气门重叠角、扬程,转速拉高时转换成角度较大的凸轮,得到较大的气门重叠角、扬程,为的就要在日常行车使用较低转速时有较高的扭力,较低的油耗,在需要加速性而使用较高的转速时,拥有较佳的马力,以满足消费者钱包和性能兼得的需求。

VTEC第一次被Honda使用,是于1989年搭载在Civic四代B16A(前身是ZC)上的VTEC系统,在自然进气(N/A)加DOHC的条件下,一升的排气量产生超过100ps的马力,1.6升的B16A拥有170ps的马力。这具引擎被搭载于Civic四代SiR。

而后,Honda也开发出以VTEC为基础的新世代引擎。如搭载于Civic六代TypeR的B16B引擎(1.6升ˋ185ps)ˋIntegra DC2的B18C 引擎(1.8升ˋ200ps)ˋS2000的F20C引擎(2.0升ˋ240ps)ˋ以及Civic八代TypeR的K20A引擎(2.0升ˋ220ps)。而他们也都是拥有每升破百马力的引擎。

后来VTEC不止使用在DOHC的引擎上,在1991年VTEC也被Honda使用在单凸轮轴(SOHC)的引擎上。

VTEC的发明,(根据Honda的宣传)是因为有一天VTEC的发明者和朋友去居酒屋喝酒的时候,看到老板在转鸡肉丸子串烧而受到启发,因而发明出来的。
