现行和既往分组
2023年，ISO决定发布ISO 639:2023，其副标题为Code for individual languages and language groups（个体语言和语言群组代码）[1]，整合了以前的5大部分：

中文的ISO 639-1代码为 zh，ISO 639-2代码为 chi (B) 和 zho (T)，ISO 639-3代码为 zho。因为二位字母代码最多只有676种可能的组合，所以很多语言只有三位字母代码，没有二位字母代码。
与 ISO 639 等效采用的中华人民共和国国家标准有：
- GB/T 4880-1991（与 ISO 639:1988 等效采用）《语种名称代码》
- GB/T 4880.2-2000（与 ISO 639-2:1998 等效采用）《语种名称代码 第2部分：3字母代码》
《中华民国国家标准》 CNS 13188 《语言名称代码表示法》与 ISO 639:1988 对应，但仅有二位字母代码。最后修正日期是1993年4月21日，所以许多 ISO 639 新代码尚未加
编码空间
2字母编码空间
2字母（以前称为“Alpha-2”）标识符（即由两个ISO基础拉丁文字母组成的代码）用于系列1。
3字母编码空间
因为二位字母代码最多只有 26×26 = 676 种可能的组合，所以许多语言最多只有三位字母代码，因三位字母代码最多有 26×26×26 = 17576 种可能的组合。
