Cairo（亦称Microsoft Windows Cairo、Windows Cairo、Microsoft Cairo[1]）是美国电脑公司微软于1991年至1996年间进行的一项操作系统开发项目，目的为打造次世代操作系统所需的科技，以期实现时任微软董事长比尔·盖茨所述“资讯触手可及（information at your fingertips）”的愿景[2]。Cairo从未实际发行，不过其使用的部分技术仍然可见于其他微软产品之中。
概要
Cairo于1991年的微软专业开发者大会中由吉姆·阿尔钦首次公开，于1993年的专业开发者大会上首次进行演示，并提供了试用版本供会议参与者使用[3][4]。
微软对Cairo的定位时有更动，一度称之为一项产品，又一度称之为一系列技术的集合[5][6]。
Cairo原先预计于1995年间推出，惟最终从未实际发行，不过其所使用的部分技术仍然可见于其他微软产品之中[6][7]。Windows 95的用户界面即建基于Cairo的用户界面[8][9]；Cairo采用分布式运算DCE/RPC技术，以便在全球电脑网络间更迅速的传输资讯，后被引入Windows NT 3.1之中；Cairo的内容索引技术现则为互联网资讯服务和Windows桌面搜索的一部分[3]。此外，Cairo所使用的物件存储文件系统原项目以WinFS的形式随Windows Vista推出，然而WinFS于2006年6月终止开发，部分技术则引入Microsoft SQL Server 2008（开发代号为“Katmai”）中[6][10]。比尔·盖茨本人曾于后来的一次访谈中证实微软原项目以WinFS作为Windows Media Player、Windows照片图库和Microsoft Office Outlook等程序的后台文件系统[11]。
