1979年匹兹堡海盗队的球季拿下98胜64败，以两场胜差击败蒙特利尔博览会队（英语：1979 Montreal Expos season）夺得国家联盟东区龙头。随后海盗队在国家联盟冠军赛中击败辛辛那提红人队（英语：1979 Cincinnati Reds season），夺得队史第九座国联冠军，之后更于世界大赛中打败巴尔的摩金莺队（英语：1979 Baltimore Orioles season），拿下队史第五座世界大赛冠军，而这座冠军也是海盗队至今最后一次在季后赛中胜出。海盗队选了斯莱吉姊妹（英语：Sister Sledge）演唱的迪斯可畅销曲“我们是一家（英语：We Are Family (song)）”，作为他们该季的主题曲。[2]
