迈克尔出生于美国西维吉尼亚州。父亲是个炼油厂的工人，母亲是一个宴会筹备人^[2]。迈克尔的家境非常普通，并没有多少音乐背景。由于受到父亲的影响，迈克尔曾经加入过未成年的篮球联盟。迈克尔的音乐兴趣源于教会，他在教会内学习了钢琴和随教会合唱团演唱。在十三岁时，迈克尔有一种“强烈的心灵感觉”，这令他成为一个虔诚的的基督徒。迈克尔回忆起：“我在颈上戴着这个大的十字架。对我来说，这是这么的真实。” （"I wore this big cross around my neck," he would recall, "It was very real to me."）^[3]迈克尔开始阅读和学习《圣经》，他寻找了一群年纪较老的朋友，一起向耶稣基督分享自己的承诺和承担的义务。那些都是迈克尔开心的往事。^[4]
