出版历史
据马乔利·金兰·劳玲丝的书中前言表示，这是根据她改编在罗里达州时同住的老夫妇的老人的经历。
剧情简介
舞台是佛罗里达州的郊外，巴克斯塔一家便住在这陆地上的“孤岛”。某日主角乔弟之父被响尾蛇所咬伤，为了解毒而射杀了一头母鹿；乔弟央求父母让他饲养残留下的小鹿，并将之命名为旗儿。旗儿对于没有同学或朋友的乔弟而言，不仅仅只是个宠物，而是像是同伴与弟弟般的存在。
但是随着时间流逝，逐渐长大的旗儿渐渐地取回了野性；开始破坏马铃薯田，成为了巴克斯塔一家的威胁。
因为不想让母亲杀死旗儿，乔弟亲手杀死了旗儿，但是这个抉择带来的痛苦与煎熬却迫使他离家出走。然而在一番经历之后，乔弟终于明白有时候人必须学着割舍自己心爱的东西而回到了家里，并且与幼稚的童年告别。
