银河系为区域性的观测者创造了隐带(红外线2MASS巡天图)

隐带(英语:Zone of Avoidance)是天空中被地球所在的银河系遮蔽而难以观测的区域[1]

在银河系的盘面(银河平面)有许多的尘埃和恒星,在可见光的范围中,阻碍了我们对天空中大约20%区域的观测。结果造成光学的星系编目在银河平面这一区域残缺不全,而这个残缺不全的区域就称为隐匿区。长久以来,研究星系的天文学家都刻意避开这一区域,因为在其他的天区中更容易观察到星系,并进行研究。

近几年来,许多计划都在研究隐带,以试图缩小这个区域和其他地区在认知上的差距。在银河系中的恒星和尘埃,在光学的波长上的消光,造成了重大的混淆,但在更长的波长上造成的消光并不明显,例如红外线,而在无线电的波长上,银河系几乎是透明的。在红外线的巡天,像IRAS2MASS,已经给了我们更完整的星系在天空中的分布图。实际上,有两个巨大的邻近星系马菲1马菲2已经在1968年被保罗·马菲红外线观测在隐带中发现。但即使如此,目前仍有10%的天空因为银河系内恒星的遮蔽而难以观测隐藏在其后的星系。

以无线电波检视隐带的计划,特别是针对来自中性氢原子(天文学上称为HI的区间)自旋跳动产生的21公分波长辐射观测,已经发现许多在红外线下看不见的星系。例如,德文格洛1德文格洛2就是以HI辐射侦测到的星系的例子。
