象鼻管星云

象鼻管星云是位于仙王座巨大的游离气体区域IC 1396内，距离地球约2,400光年的星际物质高度集中区域[1]。这块星云被称为IC 1396A，呈现出黑暗、高密度的球状。由于在可见光的波长下，这里是一个有着明亮蜿蜒边缘的黑暗斑块，因此俗称为象鼻管星云。明亮的边缘是这团云气被就在其西侧，非常明亮的大质量恒星HD 206267照亮和电离的表面。在上面的图中，大质量恒星就在图像左边的边缘。除了可以保护自己免受恒星强烈的紫外线电离的致密小球体，都整个IC 1396的区域都是被这颗大质量恒星照亮的 。 象鼻管星云现在被认为是恒星形成的区域，包含几颗在2003年的红外线影响中被发现，非常年轻（年龄低于100,000年）的恒星，以及两颗比较老（已经有几亿年，但因为这些恒星可以生活数十亿年，所以还算是年轻的恒星。），都存在于凸出的小的圆形空腔内。而空腔应该是这些年轻恒星的恒星风吹出来的。
结合来自大质量恒星的光造成气体云的边缘被电离和压缩，和年轻恒星从中心向外吹的恒星风造成气体移动的行动，使得象鼻管星云受到非常高的挤压。这些压力引发了当前这一代的原恒星[2][3]。
