行星核心行星最内部的几个层次。

类地行星的核心组成倾向于以铁为主要的成分,并且可能包含几层固体和/或液体。地球的核心有部分是液态的,火星金星的核心被认为完全是固体的,因为它们缺乏由内部引起的磁场。[1] 在我们的太阳系,核心的尺度可以从月球的大约是直径的20%到水星的约是直径的75%。


类木行星也有富含铁的核心,虽然这些核心在比例上的尺度远小于类地行星,但这些热木行星的核心实际上可能大于地球。木星的核心推测大约是地球质量的12倍(占木星质量的3%),而系外行星 HD 149026 b的质量估计是地球的70倍。

一些轨道非常靠近主星的类木行星,也许在大气层被剥离后,只留下了它们的核心。这些假设的行星分类被称为" 冥府行星 "。

一些卫星小天体和其他的小行星也许会因为大小和历史而会有不同大小的核心。木星的卫星,埃欧欧罗巴在许多方面与类地行星有如姐妹,它们非常确实的核心大约是直径的三分之一。最大的小行星之一,灶神星也同样被相信有一个分化过的独特的核心。
