蒸发气体球EGG是位于外太空的氢气区,大小约为100天文单位,这些氢气为其笼罩的气体遮蔽了电离紫外线[2]。被蒸发气体球保护着的气体浓稠区域有利于恒星的诞生[2]哈伯太空望远镜在1995年拍摄的鹰星云创生之柱的照片,首次确认了蒸发气体球的存在[2]

EGG可能是原恒星的前身。EGG内部的气体尘埃密度比周围的尘埃云高。当EGG从周围的云气中持续地吸取气体时,引力使得EGG更为紧密。当球的密度增加时,在外层的重压下,也会变得更热,原恒星便在EGG内形成。

原恒星的质量有可能太低,以致于不足以成为一颗恒星。若是如此,它会变成一颗棕矮星。如果原恒星有足够的质量,密度就能达到临界水准,也就是说中心温度可达到一千万K,而核反应开始将氢融合成氦,释放出大量的能量,原恒星就会成为一颗恒星,进入赫罗图上的主序列[3]
