苗姓源流有多种，以苗贲皇后裔为多，称为“正宗”。

苗贲皇后裔（主流）

楚国公族闘椒疑心自己功高震主，起兵挑战楚庄王，阵亡；其子贲皇逃到晋国，封于“苗邑”（今河南济源），成为苗姓先祖。

苗君后裔

相传上古有一位巫医称为“苗”，姓氏不详，治病有神效，专治瘟疫，时人尊称为“苗君”，年轻人尊称其为“苗父”，其后裔为苗姓。

少数民族后裔

为蒙古族、满族、朝鲜族等改苗姓。
