纵膈（mediastinum）是指以胸腔为中心并由疏松结缔组织所包围的构造，它并无一个明显的界限。本区域包含许多解剖构造，包含心脏及其周围血管系统、食道、气管、膈神经、心脏神经、胸导管、胸腺，以及胸腔淋巴结。
语源
[编辑]纵膈一词译自中世纪拉丁语“mediastinum”，该词源自于“mediastinus”，意为“中途”[2]。
解剖
[编辑]纵膈位于胸腔，左右被胸肋膜及肺脏所包围，前方有胸壁，后方则有脊椎骨。该区的前后分别为胸骨及脊柱包夹，包含除了肺脏以外的所有器官。该区的疏松结缔组织与颈部的组织相连。
纵膈主要可分为上纵膈（superior mediastinum）及下纵膈（inferior mediastinum）：
值得注意的是，解剖学、外科，和临床放射科对于纵膈的定义稍有不同。

临床意义

纵膈腔与多种肿瘤相关：
纵膈炎是发生于纵膈的炎症，通常为细菌性，源自于纵膈腔器官受损。由于感染速度可能极快，因此在医疗需做紧急处置。
纵膈腔气肿是描述纵膈腔内有空气的现象，如果不治疗可能会导致气胸、腹腔积气，以及心包积气。上述状况常伴随Boerhaave's syndrome或食道破裂的状况。
目前有许多技术能协助诊断纵膈腔的疾病，最常见的为胸部X光。最常见者为创伤性主动脉破裂、胸主动脉瘤，以及胸椎骨折等。
