纹章的组成元素

盔饰为构成纹章的一部分，放置于盾形的上方，是最早期的纹章外部装饰，它的起源非常古老，常见于多数古代人士的纹章中，其最初作用在于威吓敌人鼓舞己方士气并祈求神灵庇佑，到后期则具有标示纹章拥有人或是家族之社会地位，如：身份、等级、职务、爵位，不过冠饰、盔饰、支持物等外部装饰物皆无遵守严格的规则，并没有如盾形中颜色规则这样严格的规则让人遵守，但还是可以从盔饰推断出拥有者的地位，如王室成员的盔饰为正面，其他贵族则为侧面，从盔饰的精制程度也可以推断出持有人是什么身份的贵族，但因为未有严格的规范故后期也有大量平民于盾形上加上盔饰。
