皇族是指皇帝的亲属，即皇室成员，定义随着时代、地域有所不同。如君主为国王则称为王族；君主为诸侯则称为公族。

东亚

汉字文化圈的皇室为父系制度，按照宗法制度只承认父系血缘。皇族主要包括君主的直系亲属，如母亲（太后、太妃）、配偶（后妃）、子女（皇子和皇女），还有皇帝的父系亲属，即汉字文化圈所谓的宗室。皇帝的母系亲属与姻亲、女婿、外孙等则不包括在内，称为外戚，宗室的姻亲亦不包括在内。

欧洲

在欧洲，女性往往可以继承君主之位，在女性可以继位的地区，女性君主和外孙也属于皇族，并不限于父系亲属。但母方亲属仍排除在皇族之外，女性君主的姊妹虽然有皇位继承权，但她们的后代不一定有皇族身份。
