分布
本科鱼类广泛分布于全球各温带、热带水域。
深度
从浅水域到深达1500米以上之深渊皆有其踪迹。
特征
本科鱼类头部扁平，吻端钝圆，体躯在尾鳍以后侧扁。口宽广、弧形弯曲，口角多少有唇沟。齿细小，每齿有一中央尖头，两侧有一个或数个小尖头，多行一起使用。背鳍2枚，亦有1枚者，小形，无棘；第一背鳍常位于腹鳍起点。背鳍中型，尾基一般无凹洼；尾柄两侧则无纵走脂棱脊。有瞬膜，类似于猫的眼睛，一般身上都有彩色斑点和条纹。尾鳍水平不上翘。体长最大的有4米长，最小的不超过40公分。
生态
本科鱼类常出现在沙泥地、石砾滩，甚至礁岩区，以甲壳类、鱼类及软体动物为食。卵生，少数种类是卵胎生，卵为长方形角质囊。体常保持美丽条纹或斑纹做为欺敌之保护色。
