清除邻近的小天体意味着该天体在引力方面占据此处的主导地位,因此除了其天然卫星或受其引力影响的天体之外,周围没有其他大小相当的天体存在。根据国际天文学联会(IAU)2006年通过的定义,"清除邻近其他天体"被视为太阳系行星的三个必要标准之一。[1]
拥有这种能力的天体要有足够的质量才能把它轨道里的其他星体清除,这就好像在一片铺平的铁屑之中,用一块磁铁以一条线扫过这片地带,使这块磁铁越来越大,从而吸取更多的铁屑,如此类推。太阳系中的巨大气态巨行星就是这样形成的:巨大的引力使它周围的星体都纷纷撞到它的表面上。
