环绕盘古大陆的蓝色区域,即是泛大洋

泛大洋(Panthalassa,或Panthalassic Ocean)又译泛古洋盘古大洋,在希腊文中意为“所有的海洋”,是个史前超级海洋,存在于古生代中生代早期,环绕着盘古大陆。泛大洋包含太平洋特提斯洋的前身。随者特提斯洋的隔离、盘古大陆的分裂(导致大西洋北极海印度洋的出现),残余的泛大洋演变成为太平洋,因此泛大洋又称古太平洋(Paleo-Pacific)。

形成

在9亿年前,一个三向联结构造的地堑形成,使得罗迪尼亚大陆开始分裂。罗迪尼亚大陆在8亿到7亿年前分裂为南北两个大陆,泛大洋从中开始形成。在南半球的劳伦大陆西部(现今的北美洲),与此次分裂有关的构造幕成为拗拉谷,在劳伦大陆西部形成大型沉积盆地。原本环绕罗迪尼亚大陆的米洛维亚洋,随者泛非洋与泛大洋的扩张而开始缩小。在6.5到5.5亿年前,新的超大陆开始形成-潘诺西亚大陆,潘诺西亚大陆呈倒V字形,倒V字形内侧是泛大洋,外侧则是泛非洋以及米洛维亚洋的残余部分。

泛大洋的大部分海盆海洋地壳,已经隐没至北美洲板块欧亚板块下方。泛大洋板块的残余部分可能有胡安·德富卡板块戈尔达板块科科斯板块、以及纳斯卡板块,以上四者都为法拉龙板块的残余部分。在盘古大陆分裂、特提斯洋被隔离后,泛大洋形成太平洋
