在天文学上，月球发生日蚀是因其行星（地球）运行至月球与太阳之间成一直线，因此进入地球本影或半影。与此同时，在地球则观察到月蚀。

月球上出现日全蚀时，因为地球大气层会将太阳光中的波长较短的如蓝光反射及吸收，并将波长较长的如红光折射至月球表面。因此月球地表会成为红色，而不是像地球日全蚀般漆黑一片。
